Conversations toward a Social Statement

The creation of an ELCA social statement is a thorough and lengthy process that includes participation from across the entire church.  They are eventually presented to a churchwide assembly for a pass or fail vote.  We currently have statements on such items as Abortion, Immigration, Caring for creation, Human sexuality, Death penalty, and Economic life.  The statement on Economic Life reads in part:  Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All conveys ELCA teaching that economic activity is a means through which God’s will is served for the thriving and well-being of humankind and the care of the earth. It recognizes that even though sin distorts human activity, we are called to practice economic activity justly and with special concern for those who live in poverty.

We recognize that our faith is not just about what we do in church on Sunday but how we live our lives during the week.  To help congregations and individuals, the ELCA has developed social statements.  For Roman Catholics, the people turn to the Pope.  Others say, “Let your conscience be your guide.”  For the ELCA we say, “Let’s study together and decide together.

Right now a new social statement on Women and Justice is being offered for ELCA congregations to study.  Responses to the draft proposal are being accepted until Sept 30, 2018.

This is a timely study with #MeToo discussion in the news nearly every day.  We need to be a part of this conversation so here’s our chance to participate.

The study is, of course, of interest to women; but also to all men who have wives, daughters, and sisters.

If you would like to be a part of this conversation, please join us for 6 Wednesday evenings in the church library.

Kim Kaufman and Sara Bonk will be the facilitators for this study and discussion.

Read the draft statement.
