Labyrinth: Walking a Sacred Path

Wednesdays, February 17 - March 24, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

“Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth;
for I will give it to you.”
– Genesis 13:17

"I will walk in the presence of God in the land of the living." - Psalm 116: 9

During the season of Lent at Immanuel, we welcome you to visit and explore the labyrinth in our sanctuary. We invite you to walk the path of the labyrinth as a way to quiet the mind, invoke prayer, and invite insight.

What is a prayer labyrinth?

A labyrinth is an ancient pattern found in religious traditions around the world and dates as far back as 4,000 years.  The labyrinth at Immanuel (on loan from WisdomWays) is in the classic Chartes style.  For more history and information about labyrinths, visit WisdomWays.

What is it like to walk the labyrinth?

  • Walking a labyrinth integrates the body, mind and spirit and gives us time to meditate on our journey with God.
  • The purposeful path represents a journey to our center - and seeking the heart of God - and a return back into the world.  In this way, the labyrinth can be a metaphor for life’s journey.
  • The path winds in a circuitous way to the center, but the path is not a maze – there is no problem solving, no wrong turns or dead ends.  Instead, one walks towards the center, then uses the same path to return, so the entrance becomes the exit.
  • The path allows a person to become quiet and focus internally.  Each person’s walk will reflect their unique inner journey.  The labyrinth represents the path to spiritual growth and a place where all can come to experience God’s grace.

All are welcome to walk the labyrinth - as individuals or households.

Please wear socks on the labyrinth (no shoes).

Sign-up here for a 30-minute increment.

NOTE: For those that may prefer to remain at home or are unable to walk the labyrinth, printable paper "Finger Labyrinths" are available, which will also be included in Immanuel's take-home Lenten Bags.
